Quarter of UK adults dependent on alcohol

Nearly a quarter of adults or 12 million people in the UK are dependent on alcohol, according to new research.

The study, conducted by the Priory Group, found that 23 per cent of people have a drink to relieve the symptoms of
depression, fear, loneliness or low self-esteem, or what researchers identify as the "hole in the soul", whilst 14 per cent
often use alcohol to give themselves "Dutch courage" before work or a social engagement.

It was also discovered that over 60 per cent of adults think it is acceptable to binge-drink during the festive period, 42
per cent have vomited from drinking too much, two in five drink before sexual intercourse to lose their inhibitions.

Dr Massimo Riccio of the Priory Hospital claims that the UK is developing a dangerous culture which accepts and even
encourages excess drinking.

"British society takes alcohol misuse lightly and, in many segments, it's important to be a 'good drunk' to fit in socially,
which is a fertile breeding ground for future alcohol problems," he said.

"Alcohol is generally the first drug that people take. It is socially acceptable, ubiquitous and relatively inexpensive, all
of which contribute to today's widespread misuse."
